Tundra

Sameen Shakya

Torn tundras. Tumultuous times.
Toil and trouble. Unpack the mind.
See what spillage has leaked within
from eyes, ears and mouth. Even skin.

Eyes that see atrocities made flesh,
then unmade. Ears that hear silence
and cackles. Mouths that want to speak
but can’t. And skin that cakes into wounds.

Wounds are what we all have in common.
Yet each day, I see two types of people.
One who picks their wounds for all
to see, and one who picks others’ for fun.

We’ll kill each other soon enough.
Some will kill themselves before even that.
These tumultuous times will end, and
the world will turn to tundras, all torn up.
