A special charity program titled Slam Poetry Recitation and Music was held at the North Berkeley Senior Center, California, to celebrate and support Mr. Nirmal Phuyal, a prominent figure in promoting Nepali literature, art, and music in the San Francisco Bay Area. Despite being bedridden for over six months due to severe health issues, Mr. Phuyal’s contributions to the diaspora Nepali community remain unparalleled.
Known for organizing cultural and musical events, Mr. Phuyal has been a tireless advocate for Nepali culture abroad. Over the years, he has hosted numerous programs, often covering all expenses, including airfare and accommodation for artists, as well as service fees. The hybrid charity event on December 7, 2024, blended humorous slam poetry with soulful Nepali music, creating a memorable evening. It featured two dynamic hosts: Dr. Tika Lamsal, a professor at San Francisco University known for his humor and wit, and Tika Pun, a popular Bay Area program host.
Poet Amar Tamang opened the event with a heartfelt poem dedicated to Mr. Phuyal, praising his selfless contributions. Esteemed singers Mamata Dibbim, Nita Acharya, Laxmi Kharel, and Tal Man Magar performed soulful songs that resonated deeply with the audience. The poetry segment featured senior Nepali satirist Nabaraj Karki, Pramod Amatya, Babu Acharya, and Narayan Bhattarai, who captivated the audience with their humor and satire.
The event was supported by the generosity of the community. Manish Poudel provided food from his restaurant, donating 50% of the proceeds to Mr. Phuyal. Amrit Jung Kuwar contributed the sound system, and yoga instructor Suresh Bhatta donated 25% of the sales from his book Be Happy; Be Healthy 24/7.
Audience feedback collected via Google Forms showed overwhelming appreciation, with 80% rating the program a perfect 10.
