Poet Roshan Yakso’s debut poetry collection Samjhanako Chomolungma has been launched on Saturday in the capital.
The book was jointly unveiled by Chancellor of Nepal Academy Bhupal Rai, Bimala Tumkhewa and writer Shakuntala Joshi were present as special guests.
Speaking at the event, Chancellor Rai described Yakso’s poetry as “poetry of the people,” noting that it reflects a wide range of societal dimensions. He remarked that while poets in the past often remained detached from the public, contemporary poetry must connect with the people and speak their language. In this spirit, he affirmed, “Yakso’s voice is the voice of the people.” Rai also lauded the contributions of diaspora writers for keeping the pulse of Nepali literature alive beyond borders.
Tumkhewa and Joshi highlighted how Yakso’s poems reflect various movements for social change. They noted that the collection offers a parallel commentary on numerous issues and leaves a deep impact on readers.
Currently residing in Hong Kong, Yakso is also the co-coordinator of the Hong Kong Sahityik Sajh.
Poets Rima KC and Elisa Eklaas recited selected poems from the collection. Organized by Sambhav Samuha, the program also included a felicitation of the poet, chief guest, special guests, and the reciting poets. The event was emceed by poet Sanjit Phalana.
