The Literary Journalists Association had decided to honor Nepali poet and journalist Mani Lohani and Canada-based Nepali writer Suren Upreti for Byathit Kavya Honor and Byathit Kavya Diaspora Honor 2024. In a statement released to the press, the Association has announced the honor in favor of Lohani and Upreti for the year 2024.
Lohani is a well-known Nepali poet, storywriter and journalist. Associated with Kantipur media, his published works include poetry collecions Chatapatayeka Kalamharu, Malami Saanjh, Mrityuko Aghiltira, and storycollections Asahamatika Pailaharoo, Parasta Prem and Nirbastra Man. Lohani is the winner of Moti Puraskar, Rashtriya Kalashree Yuva Puraskar, and several other awards and citations.
Suren Upreti was formerly a human rights activist while in Nepal. After he moved to Canada he became a member of the Board of Director of the Nepalese Organization of Ottawa for two terms: 2004- 6 and 2012-14. He was elected President of INLS Canada Chapter in 2004 and served as one until 2010 . Then he served as a General Secretary of the Central Committee of INLS for two years from 2006 to 2008. He became a member of Canada Nepal Solidarity for Peace in 2066 BS and assumed the responsibility of the vice president of NRNA Canada from 2015 to 2017. He served as a member of language and literature sub committee of NRNA global from 2017 to 2019. Mr. Upreti was chosen coordinator of NRNA- ICC, Culture and Heritage Committee, North America from 2019 to 21 and from 2o21 to 23. H also worked as the managing editor of SahityaSagar.net . He is a life member of Bhairab Aryal Literary Trust, Yuddhaprasad Mishra Pratishthan, Dayitwa Wangmaya Pratishthan , Nepal -Sahitya Sadan, Int’l Bal Sahitya Pratishthan and INLS. Advisor to INLS Canada Chapter, 2010 -2023, Upreti also served as the editor of Pratidhwoni ( Echo) part -I and II, INLS Canada, Sahitya Sandhya Monthly- 2053 – 54 BS , NRN Smarika ( Souvenir) Canada, Antardesiya Kathaharu ( Transnational Stories) , 2076 BS ( NRNA Bhasha Sahitya Sub-committee( language and literature sub- committee). He also coordinated the publication of Distant Rays, an of North American Story Collection (in English). He lent leadership to NRNA Bhasha Sahitya Sub-committee 2076 BS, Nepali Language Curriculum Part -I for grades one to four, and Part II for grades V to VIII. He was also the editor of the compendium of NRNA Language and Literature First International Convention 2019. He was a member of secretary in this convention . Besides these, he has edited Krishna Prakash Shrestha Memoir (2078) Nepali Culture and Heritage in Diaspora (2080), and Diary of Lockdown (2080) He also served as the editorial member of Akchhyar Shiromani (Letter Laureate) Madanmani Deekchhit. His personal creative publications include Aajaka Sworharu, (poetry collection) and eight collections of child stories. One of them , Daughters of Everest, appeared in English. Eternal Journey (collection of short stories) and Badhshalako Disco Dhun ( The disco tune of slaughter house)are his essay collections. Nepalko Shan (The Pride of Nepal) is a collection of biography. He has also penned several rhymes for children and modern songs, ghazals, muktaks, haikus and other genres published in more than 15 various electronic and print journals as well as weeklies. Upreti has earlier won many awards including Satya Mohan Joshi centenary, NAEE Kirti Ratna, Bal Tara Honor, as well as many letters of honors in copper plates.
