Journey Through India: Insights for Nepal’s Growth

Dr. Krishna Sharma

Embarking on a journey with loved ones always promises a mix of anticipation, excitement, and purpose. On January 30th, 2024, my family, consisting of my son Rikesh Sharma, my spouse Rita Gautam, and myself, set out on a trip to Delhi. The primary motive behind our visit was to seek medical attention for our son at Apollo Hospital, Delhi. With our flight scheduled for 1:45 pm, and our return ticket confirmed for February 5th, 2024, we embarked on this trip with a blend of hope and apprehension. While I had visited Delhi numerous times before, this trip held a special significance as it allowed me ample time to spend with my family, particularly with my 12-year-old son, who eagerly awaited each moment of our journey. Furthermore, I was also expecting to thoroughly explore and understand the economic landscapes of both the countries, allowing for a comprehensive assessment of their respective trajectories and potential future developments.

As we navigated through the bustling streets of Delhi, the metro became our preferred mode of transportation. The Delhi Metro, a marvel of modern engineering, has revolutionized the city’s public transportation system since its inception. Launched on December 24, 2002, by the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the metro has since expanded its network, encompassing a vast expanse of the city. First phase initiated in 1998, laid the foundation for a network spanning 65 km, while in second phase, additional 125 km within four and a half years expansion was made. Today, the Delhi Metro boasts over 300 train sets, offering fast, reliable, and efficient travel across the city. Its contribution to environmental conservation, through initiatives such as regenerative braking, has earned it the moniker of the “lifeline” of Delhi.

One of the highlights of Delhi’s transportation landscape is the prevalence of vehicles fueled by compressed natural gas (CNG). Widely used in auto-rickshaws, cars, and buses, CNG serves as a cleaner and more sustainable alternative to traditional fuels like petrol and diesel. With its lower emissions and cost-effective nature, CNG has gained popularity among commuters seeking an eco-friendly mode of transport. The longevity and cost-efficiency of CNG engines further underscore its appeal, promising a better lifespan and fuel efficiency compared to conventional diesel variant.

The check-up at Apollo Hospital was completed in two days, leaving us with three more days to spare in Delhi. Therefore, we decided to explore beyond the city limits and embarked on a journey to Agra, Brindavan, and Mathura, the birthplace of Lord Krishna. The journey was both interesting and enjoyable, filled with the exploration of historical landmarks and indulgence in local cuisine unique to each area.

As our trip to Delhi draws to a close, I reflect on our experiences and offer a few recommendations. Firstly, I commend the efficiency and convenience of the Delhi Metro, urging both residents and visitors to embrace this eco-friendly mode of transportation. The metro not only eases traffic congestion but also significantly reduces carbon emissions, contributing to cleaner air and a healthier environment for all. Additionally, I advocate for the widespread adoption of CNG vehicles, emphasizing their role in reducing pollution and conserving resources. By choosing CNG-powered vehicles, individuals can actively contribute to mitigating the adverse effects of vehicular emissions on public health and the environment.

As known, capital expenditure, such as investing in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and technology, is essential for economic development. India recognizes this and actively invests in these sectors to drive sustainable growth and prosperity. These investments stimulate economic activity, create jobs, and improve productivity, competitiveness, and quality of life for its citizens, fostering inclusive and sustainable development.

Furthermore, our excursion beyond Delhi’s boundaries to Agra, Brindavan, and Mathura underscored the rich cultural heritage and historical significance of the region. Exploring these destinations provided us with valuable insights into India’s vibrant past and spiritual traditions. I encourage travelers to venture beyond the bustling city streets of Delhi and immerse themselves in the diverse tapestry of culture, history, and spirituality that the surrounding regions have to offer.

India’s blend of vibrant culture, rich history, and commitment to sustainability makes it a captivating destination. Through eco-friendly practices and preservation efforts, India offers travelers a journey that intertwines ancient traditions with modernity. From the iconic Taj Mahal to the serene backwaters of Kerala, visitors are invited to explore a tapestry of experiences while contributing to a more sustainable future. By promoting religious and historical landmarks, India invites travelers to immerse themselves in its diverse heritage and become part of its narrative. In India, tourism isn’t just about sightseeing; it’s about embracing responsibility and forging connections that endure through time.

In other side, Nepal could indeed benefit from focusing on the promotion of its natural heritage, particularly its connection to spiritual and historical landmarks such as Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha, and its status as home to the highest peak in the world, Mount Everest. Aiming on preserving and promoting diverse natural heritage, including national parks, wildlife reserves, and scenic landscapes can attract nature enthusiasts and conservation-minded travelers.

Nepal’s cultural heritage, including its ancient temples, monasteries, and traditional villages, offers unique opportunities for cultural tourism. Investing in preservation efforts, cultural festivals, and heritage trails can showcase Nepal’s rich cultural tapestry and attract tourists interested in immersing themselves in authentic cultural experiences.

However, as we bid farewell to the bustling streets of Delhi, I carry with me cherished memories and a renewed commitment to sustainable living. Our journey, marked by moments of togetherness and exploration, served as a reminder of the importance of cherishing time with loved ones and treading lightly on the planet.
