GCM Social Club Hosts Event on Nepali Cinema’s Impact and Influence

The GCM Social Club, a student organization at Global College of Management, Mid-Baneshwor, organized an event titled “Chalachitrako Adhar: Prahar, Prakash ra Prabhav” on August 8 at the college auditorium. The event aimed to explore various dimensions of the Nepali film industry and its connection to society, featuring a panel discussion with popular cinema artists Surakshya Pantha, Najir Husen, and Swastima Khadka.

The discussion began with the artists sharing their stories about their attraction to the film industry and their struggles in building their acting careers. Actress Surakshya Pantha recounted how she persistently pursued her passion for the film industry despite her parents’ initial disapproval. “My family, being academic, wanted me to become an engineer, but I continued to follow my passion. Eventually, they agreed,” she shared. Similarly, actress Swastima Khadka cited the comedic duo Mahajodi as her inspiration in the film industry. “My parents were quite liberal, and I had the privilege to turn my passion into a profession,” Swastima said. Actor Najir Husen also discussed his acting journey, which began as a theater artist at Mandala Theatre.

The panelists admitted that their experiences in the film industry have differed significantly from their initial expectations. Actor Husen, who belongs to the Madhesi community, mentioned the tendency to stereotype actors based on their cultural background. “I am often cast in Madhesi roles, but I am more than just a particular character,” he added.

During the event, trailers for Surakshya Pantha’s Gulabi, Swastima Khadka’s Chiso Manche, and Najir Husen’s Hostel were played, followed by brief discussions about each movie. Pantha and Khadka’s upcoming films, Gulabi and Chiso Manche, are expected to reflect cultural diversity and address serious social issues. The guest speakers also responded to audience questions related to the film industry.

The event featured a live musical performance by the GCM Musical Club, adding to the vibrant atmosphere.

Anita Pokharel, a GCM student, moderated the discussion, while students Sambridhi Prasai and Bishal Khanal hosted the event.

The GCM Social Club has been organizing various events related to social issues for the past six years.
