A Trap

Mahesh Paudyal
Translated by Ayodhyanath Choudhary

We spent, looking only at each other
the whole of youth, half of our lives;
We were able to see all and the whole
allowed and forbidden areas of shame.

One day, how at the blink of an eye, we realized:
Time had crept stealthily from behind the curtain
and run away turning the whole of your head snow-white
and sprinkling frost on mine!

Though constantly on guard, how were we unable to see
the falling snow, on your head?
The drizzle of frost, on my head?

Looking at each other, what really did we see?
Being on guard every moment, what did we really prevent?
